community and my broken heart

Jenni led a discussion about community that lasted for our entire time together. We feel comfortable enough together that we went over our allotted time easily, talking for more than two hours before we noticed the clock. Jenni talked about how our struggles aren’t personal failures. So instead of asking “What’s wrong with me?” and trying to fix ourselves, we can ask “Where do I need support?” So often when we are struggling, we think we are inherently broken, but maybe we just need help.

Girl Scouts at inauguration

As the mom of a Girl Scout, I'm appalled that the Girl Scouts would participate in this inauguration.  Girl Scouts of the USA (the organization) tells the story that it is a champion of Girl Scouts (the girls) who have chosen to participate. GSUSA also touts the girls' participation as celebrating civic engagement and the workings of our democratic government. Together, these two claims are disingenuous and cowardly.

New Year: how's it going?

I’ll have to admit when I sat down for our January 2nd Badass Mama’s meeting, I so thought we’d be discussing goals for the New Year. I’m one of those people that’s often gleeful about the prospect of a fresh start, a calendar ripped out of the cellophane and tacked to the wall, the word “January” in bold print. But that’s not where Jenni led us.
